The Role of Hong Kong in China’s Football Dream (20/05/2018)

While China’s football dream has arguably existed for many decades, it was for the first time clearly articulated in 2011, when Xi Jinping defined his three wishes for Chinese football: to host the World Cup, to qualify for the World Cup, and to eventually win the World Cup. This ambitious plan has kickstarted an unprecedented amount of investment, particularly in youth academies, and also accelerated both development and intervention into China’s professional football leagues to nurture the players of the future. In the meanwhile, Hong Kong has been struggling to find its role within this national push, in which the SAR is perceived more as a rival than an ally. To raise competitiveness, Hong Kong has followed its own strategy of naturalization, triggering new debates about ‘Chineseness’ in sports.
