Brian Kan tackles another important topic in The Tale of Tom the Turtle: A School of Fish, and has created an engaging tale of friendship and fitting in that young readers can surely to relate to. The then 8-year-old Kan first appeared on the scene last year, after writing and illustrating his first book, The Tale of Tom the Turtle, which warned us about the effects of sea pollution. His newest work features Tom the Turtle once again, this time focusing on his attempts to make friends at a new school.

9-year-old author Brian Kan continues ‘The Tale of Tom the Turtle’ with sequel about how to deal with bullying

Tom the Turtle and his family are forced to flee their home as the pollution in their area of the sea worsens. He finds himself in an unfamiliar neighbourhood, about to start afresh at a new school. On top of that, all of his classmates are fish and as the only turtle, he sticks out like a sore thumb. Will Tom manage to make friends? And will he be able to help when danger threatens the Fish School?

The second instalment in The Tale of Tom the Turtle series addresses important themes that everyone, regardless of age, can recognise in their own lives. Tom is moved from his comfort zone to an entirely new environment, a scenario familiar to many. The book promotes the idea of adaptability but emphasises that putting on a front is not the way to go. Kan seems to be saying that being yourself is what will gain you true friends, an approach to life that will undoubtedly be beneficial to his readers.

The story is complemented by colourful illustrations, also by the author, that give a visual representation of what is happening and keeps the reader’s interest from waning. It is an addition which can be especially helpful for young readers looking for something to ease them from picture books to ones with more text. The writing itself is easy to follow with a few challenging words sprinkled in, like ‘mockingly’, that readers may not have encountered before.

The Tale of Tom the Turtle: A School of Fish manages to communicate some important life lessons in a straightforward manner, earning it a recommendation for budding readers.
