“He was a sympathiser with the poor, the suffering, and the oppressed; and by his death, one of England’s greatest writers is lost to the world.”
– The epitaph for Charles Dickens at the Poet’s Corner in Westminster Abbey, England

Everyone could easily name at least two or three works by Charles Dickens, one of the world’s best known literary giants in classic English Literature. Born in February 1812, after his father was imprisoned for debts, 12-year-old Dickens was sent to work in a blacking-warehouse for 3 years. The adversity he endured and witnessed had heavily influenced his future writings.

Dickens was not only widely recognized for his vivid descriptions on the characters, and the comprehensive details of the contemporary life in the Victorian era, but also the bigger idea laid behind his works made him one of the greatest writers of all times. Social issues, such as child labour, poverty, and the inefficiencies of government bureaucracy, were recurring themes in his stories. His concern to the exploited lower class aroused the attention of the reading public of all posterity towards the disadvantages.

Major works include Oliver Twist, A Christmas Carol, David Copperfield, Hard Times, A Tale of Two Cities, and Great Expectations.
