Making English Reading Lesson Interactive and Inspirational
-- A Non-fiction Reading Workshop for English Teachers (25/03/2010)

The Commercial Press is honoured to invite Mr. Torben Nielsen, who has been an ELT English teacher trainer in different countries for over 10 years, to speak for us on how to adopt non-fiction reading material to make your English reading lesson interactive and inspirational to students. Audience will uncover new teaching ideas through the unique focus on READ, LISTEN and WATCH using related examples from National Geographic Living English.

Workshop content:

• Why students are inactive in English reading?
• Comparing fiction and non-fiction. Why non-fiction reading is important?
• What teachers can do to arouse students developing learner autonomy and self-directed English learning?
• Demonstrate how teachers can adopt the interactive and inspirational approaches to help their students to develop non-fiction reading skills.

About the speaker:

Torben Nielsen has been teaching, examining and conducting ELT teacher training in locations such as Australia, Japan, China, Hong Kong, Philippines and Taiwan for over 10 years. Torben has accumulated much precious teaching experience and he is now extending his professional academic ELT experience in the classroom by conducting teacher training seminars all over eastern Asia. His is specialized in reading strategies and examinations, recently completing an IELTS publication and working as a certified Cambridge Examiner for adults and young learners.

About National Geographic Living English:

To prepare students in school-based assessment (SBA) in the new English syllabus, teachers have to think of ways to develop students' non-fiction literacy skills. In light of this, The Commercial Press proudly presents our first non-fiction series, National Geographic Living English, for English learners as supplementary class reading. Each reader is available with a DVD containing video and audio to arouse students’ interest. Exercise is provided to inspire and reinforce students' learning.
